  • Carrying out thorough pre-use and safety checks
  • Safely manoeuvring and operating the excavator
  • Excavating trenches, foundations and other groundworks
  • Understanding machine capabilities, limitations and safe working practices

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)

The CPCS offers a wide range of plant categories, with practical and theory assessments designed to confirm your competence. Assessments are completed at the end of your training.

  • Pass the relevant Health, Safety and Environment Test.
  • Attend training days in your chosen category.
  • At the end of your training, complete your category assessments (assessment fee’s are included in your course price).
  • Receive your Trained Operator (red) or Competent Operator (blue) card.

What is the difference between the Red and Blue CPCS Card?

Once you achieve your CPCS Red Card, you can begin working in your chosen category. The card confirms your essential skills and knowledge, while newly qualified operators require close supervision until they gain sufficient experience. The Blue CPCS Card recognises experienced operators who can work safely without supervision.

Red CPCS Card

Each category on your CPCS Red Card is valid for two years, although the card itself does not have an overall expiry date. The Red Card is non-renewable and is intended to support progression towards the Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card. Within the two-year period, operators are expected to complete the relevant NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) and upgrade to the Blue CPCS Card.

Blue CPCS Card

CPCS Blue Card To obtain your CPCS Blue Card, you must meet the Red Card requirements and successfully complete the relevant NVQ or SVQ for your chosen category.
The Blue Card is valid for five years, with all categories sharing the same expiry date. You must renew your card before the five-year validity period ends.
